What is CHP?

CHP (combined heat and power) the earlier ones where basically engines converted to run on oil or gas, electricity been the primary output and heat been the secondary.

They have been around for many years, but mainly used in industrial applications like hotels etc because it wasn't possible to obtain small CHP systems at sizes less than 5 kWE- too large for a single home.

How they work is simple, the unit runs and provides most the electric consumption needed and what is not needed is bought back by the electrical supplier, its funny watching an electric meter running backwards. Heat is the bi product of the unit and can be used for providing all heating and hot water consumption.

Micro CHP units are currently being developed for the domestic market by Potterton Baxi and it shouldn't be long before they become commercially available.

Some of the electricity used in the home is generated from the micro CHP unit rather than the power station, and heat from the generated that other wise would be wasted can be used in the home. Supplementary electricity power will be required by the grid at times of peak use, and the CHP will export power when the demand of the dwelling is less than that generated by the CHP.

Although the technology is yet to be established, micro CHP systems have the potential to make a saving in†CO2 emissions from the home. Manufacturers claims are that CHP engines will cost around £600 more than conventional domestic boilers, but could reduce annual domestic electricity by £ 150- £300.

This will be the future, and probably not so distant future.

With the constant changes in building regulations in particularly part L building regulations, we can see the governments agenda in relation to energy efficiency and the reduction of green house gases released into the atmosphere.

Also with the future introduction of energy assessment of dwellings, the government would have a database of energy efficient homes, and obviously properties that were not so energy efficient.

So it follows that, the government if it so wished could then impose tax levies on properties that polluted the atmosphere, forcing the owner of the property to make the property more environmentally friendly.

The government is constantly moving the goal posts in relation to part L and J and I don't think it will be long before further changes are made to building regulations making us fit renewable energy systems like solar power, geothermic, CHP, etc as a matter of course.

As a company we our committed to improving our training and development in relation to more energy efficient heating and hot water systems. Boiler manufactures are just beginning to manufacture and have available, systems like solar panels, and we will continue to expand our knowledge in these areas.
